Memodyne Side Effects, Ingredient by Ingredient

Quick answer

Stomach upset is the side effect listed most for Memodyne's amino acids.

Arginine and citrulline can lower blood pressure and may add to blood pressure pills, nitrates and sildenafil-type drugs. Tingling and flushing are unlikely at 40 mg beta alanine and 7.5 mg niacin.

Does Memodyne have side effects?

It can, although no study has tried this exact capsule. The label has a caution box but lists no side effects, so what we know comes from research on each ingredient alone, at far larger amounts.

400 mgarginine forms; studies used grams
200 mgcitrulline salts; trials used 3 to 9 g
40 mgbeta alanine; tingling from about 800 mg
7.5 mgniacin; flushing from about 30 mg

Small amounts make dose-driven problems such as loose stools or tingling less likely. They do not switch off drug interactions, because no source names an amount below which the arginine warnings stop. So arginine comes first.

What can each Memodyne ingredient do on its own?

Each has its own safety picture. Pick one to see what the sources list and the amount researchers gave.

Two Memodyne bottles at the center of the five-ingredient wheel

Amino acid: 200 mg base plus 200 mg AKG

L-arginine

Mayo Clinic lists nausea, belly pain, bloating, diarrhea, gout, headache, allergic reactions and worse asthma. In exercise research, 9 to 30 g a day brought on diarrhea and nausea.

Studied at: 2 to 24 g a day

Amino acid: 100 mg HCl plus 100 mg malate

L-citrulline

WebMD reports no side effects of its own, yet 6 of 41 weightlifters in one study had stomach discomfort. The kidneys turn most of it into arginine, so it shares arginine's interactions.

Studied at: 3 to 9 g a day

Amino acid: 40 mg

Beta alanine

Prickling skin on the face, neck, hands and upper body for 60 to 90 minutes, plus itch, at high doses.

Studied at: 1.6 to 6.4 g a day

Vitamin B3: 7.5 mg NE

Niacin

Red, hot, itchy skin from nicotinic acid at 30 to 50 mg or more. The label does not name its niacin form.

Studied at: Adult need 14 to 16 mg NE; upper limit 35 mg

Mineral: 18 mg as calcium carbonate

Calcium

Gas, bloating and constipation with calcium supplements; it can also slow levothyroxine absorption.

Studied at: Adult need 1,000 to 1,200 mg

Can you take L-arginine with blood pressure medicine?

Only once your doctor says yes. Mayo Clinic notes that oral L-arginine has lowered blood pressure even in healthy people, and that pairing it with blood pressure drugs may push pressure too low (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). RxList rates that interaction Major (RxList, L-Arginine (supplement monograph)).

Citrulline belongs in the same conversation, since the body converts it into arginine; WebMD advises care with any blood pressure medicine (WebMD, L-citrulline: Uses and Risks). One capsule is far below the grams behind these warnings, but no source sets a safe floor.

Taking any blood pressure pill? Show the label to whoever manages your blood pressure before the first capsule. Dizziness on standing after you start is a reason to stop and call.

Is Memodyne safe with Viagra, Cialis or nitroglycerin?

Not without your prescriber; here the warnings are bluntest. With L-arginine, nitrates such as nitroglycerin and isosorbide and sildenafil (Viagra, Revatio) may drive blood pressure too low (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).

For citrulline, WebMD says to avoid nitrates, and warns that combining it with sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil "may cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure" (WebMD, L-citrulline: Uses and Risks). Nor is the capsule an ED aid: ED research used 5 g of arginine a day, over 12 times its arginine forms (RxList, L-Arginine (supplement monograph)).

Should anyone take arginine after a heart attack?

No, unless a cardiologist decides otherwise. The VINTAGE MI trial gave 153 heart attack patients about 9 g of L-arginine a day or a placebo for six months. Six on arginine died (8.6%) against none on placebo, and the authors advised against it after a heart attack (JAMA 2006, Schulman et al., L-arginine after heart attack (VINTAGE MI)).

Mayo Clinic says L-arginine isn't recommended after a recent heart attack, and RxList says not to take it (RxList, L-Arginine (supplement monograph)). The trial used over 20 times the arginine in one Memodyne capsule, so it does not prove harm at 400 mg; it explains why heart history matters.

Does arginine affect diabetes medicine or cold sores?

Diabetes medicines

Mayo Clinic and RxList both say L-arginine may lower blood sugar (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine) (RxList, L-Arginine (supplement monograph)), which could add to insulin or a glucose-lowering pill. Ask your doctor how often to check readings.

Herpes and cold sores

One drug-information source cautions that L-arginine might make herpes worse, because the virus seems to need arginine to multiply (RxList, L-Arginine (supplement monograph)); other sources do not raise it. With frequent outbreaks, ask first and stop if a flare starts.

Will Memodyne cause beta alanine tingling or a niacin flush?

Both are unlikely at the label amounts.

Beta alanine tingling at 40 mg

The pins-and-needles feeling, called paresthesia, is common above about 800 mg taken at once (ISSN position stand: Beta-Alanine (2015)). One capsule holds 40 mg, a twentieth of that. WebMD describes the feeling as harmless and says it goes away by itself (WebMD, Beta-Alanine). Our beta alanine page compares the amounts in detail.

Niacin flushing at 7.5 mg

Flushing typically begins at 30 to 50 mg of nicotinic acid, and the adult upper limit from supplements is 35 mg (NIH ODS, Niacin (consumer)). One capsule gives 7.5 mg. With a multivitamin or pre-workout, add up the labels.

Should you ask a doctor before starting Memodyne?

Six yes-or-no questions will tell you; nothing is stored.

Memodyne safety check

  1. Have you had a heart attack, or do you live with heart disease?

  2. Do you use nitroglycerin, isosorbide, sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil?

  3. Do you take medicine for blood pressure, blood sugar or blood clotting?

  4. Are you pregnant, breastfeeding or under 18?

  5. Do you get cold sores or herpes outbreaks often?

  6. Has your memory or focus got worse quickly, or begun to disrupt daily tasks?

Answer every question to see your result. Nothing is saved or sent.

Memory trouble that is worsening or disrupting daily life needs a doctor, not a supplement trial (NIA, Forgetfulness: Knowing When to Ask for Help). Timing tips are on our how to take Memodyne page.

When should you stop taking Memodyne?

Stop and get help the same day for a serious reaction, and call your doctor about anything that lingers. Keep the bottle to show what you took.

  • Swollen face or throat, hives or trouble breathing: call 911.
  • Fainting, or dizziness each time you stand.
  • Stomach pain or diarrhea lasting more than a few days.
  • A cold sore or herpes flare after you start.
  • A broken or missing safety seal on arrival.

The FDA asks people to stop and report a supplement that causes a problem (FDA, FDA 101: Dietary Supplements). Stopping does not cancel a refund; our Memodyne guarantee page sets out the 60-day window and the brand's conflicting rules.

Memodyne side effects: questions people ask

Does Memodyne have side effects?

It can. Stomach upset and headache are listed for arginine; the bigger risk is low blood pressure with heart, blood pressure or ED medicines.

Can I take Memodyne with blood pressure medication?

Only after your doctor agrees. RxList rates arginine with blood pressure medicines as a Major interaction.

Can I take Memodyne with Viagra or sildenafil?

Not without your prescriber. With sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil, blood pressure may drop too far.

What are the side effects of nitric oxide supplements?

For arginine and citrulline: stomach upset, diarrhea, bloating, headache, low blood pressure and clashes with nitrates and ED drugs.

Will Memodyne cause beta alanine tingling or niacin flushing?

Very unlikely. Tingling is common from about 800 mg of beta alanine and flushing from 30 mg of nicotinic acid; the capsule has 40 mg and 7.5 mg.

Can arginine trigger cold sores?

Possibly. RxList cautions it might make herpes worse; the other sources we checked are silent on it.

I felt dizzy after starting Memodyne. What should I do?

Stop taking it, sit down until it passes and call your doctor. Dizziness can mean your blood pressure fell.

Is Memodyne safe during pregnancy?

The label tells you to check with a physician first. Effects of arginine and beta alanine in pregnancy are unknown.
