Beta Alanine in Memodyne: A 40 mg Dose Checked Against the Research
Quick answer
Each Memodyne capsule lists 40 mg of beta alanine. Sports studies use 4 to 6 g a day to raise muscle carnosine, so this is about 1% of that. A company-funded trial in older adults gave 2.4 g a day and found no overall thinking benefit, only a subgroup gain. Tingling starts near 800 mg, so it is unlikely here.

What is beta alanine, and why is it on a focus label?
Beta alanine is an amino acid best known from sports supplements, where it is taken to raise carnosine in muscle. In Memodyne it is the smallest amino acid line on the panel: 40 mg, with no Daily Value.

The ingredient lists do not agree. The label prints seven lines, including beta alanine. The brand's sales page names beta alanine but drops calcium. The seller pack's list, like the graphic on the left, leaves beta alanine out.
When the sources clash we go by the bottle. The label is what the capsule is supposed to contain, so this page treats 40 mg as the amount you would take.
How does 40 mg compare with the 4 to 6 g that sports studies use?
It is about 1% of the low end. The International Society of Sports Nutrition says daily intake of 4 to 6 g for at least 2 to 4 weeks raises muscle carnosine, split into doses of 2 g or less (ISSN position stand: Beta-Alanine (2015)).
| Where the number comes from | Daily beta alanine | What it was for |
|---|---|---|
| ISSN position stand | 4 to 6 g, at least 2 to 4 weeks | Raising muscle carnosine for exercise |
| NIH safety data | 1.6 to 6.4 g, up to 8 weeks | Checking side effects |
| Older-adult trial (2023) | 2.4 g for 10 weeks | Thinking, mood and physical tests |
| Tingling threshold | about 800 mg at once | When the skin sensation tends to start |
| Memodyne capsule | 40 mg | Sold for focus, clarity and energy |
The point of the table is scale. Every result described below came from doses 40 to 160 times larger than what one Memodyne capsule supplies. You can see the full seven-line panel on the supplement facts page.

Does beta alanine raise carnosine in the brain or protect neurons?
The research is about muscle, not the brain. ISSN says beta alanine raises muscle carnosine when the dose is high enough and the course long enough, and WebMD notes it must be taken every day for at least four weeks to do so (WebMD, Beta-Alanine).
Even for exercise the gains are small. The NIH calls the results mixed, with modest help in short, very hard efforts (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Exercise and Athletic Performance (health professional)). Here is how the brand's words line up with the label and the sources:

Did the older-adult beta alanine trial improve memory?
Not for the group as a whole. In a 2023 trial, 100 older adults with an average age of 70.6 took 2.4 g of beta alanine or a placebo every day for 10 weeks, and overall thinking scores did not differ between the groups (Nutrients 2023, Ostfeld et al., beta-alanine and cognition in older adults).

Who paid
A supplement company, Natural Alternative Inc., funded the study.
A subgroup result is a lead for future research, not proof. Mood, anxiety and physical tests showed no difference, although depression scores fell on beta alanine. The trial says nothing about 40 mg, and no one has tested this formula.
Will 40 mg of beta alanine make your skin tingle?
Very unlikely. The tingling, called paresthesia, is reported at doses of at least 800 mg, or above 10 mg per kilogram of body weight, and one capsule holds a twentieth of 800 mg.
When it does happen it shows up on the face, neck, backs of the hands and upper trunk, and lasts 60 to 90 minutes (NIH ODS, Dietary Supplements for Exercise and Athletic Performance (health professional)). ISSN says splitting the dose into smaller amounts of about 1.6 g reduces it. WebMD adds that the feeling is not harmful and fades by itself.
Is beta alanine safe, and who should check first?
At sports doses it appears safe for healthy people, but long-term data are missing. ISSN says there is no safety information for use beyond one year, and WebMD says the FDA has not reviewed beta alanine for safety and effectiveness.
- Allergy: WebMD lists serious allergic reactions as possible.
- Pregnancy and nursing: effects are unknown; the label tells pregnant or nursing mothers and anyone under 18 to see a physician first.
- Medicines: WebMD says interactions with beta alanine are not fully understood. The bigger medicine questions in Memodyne come from its arginine and citrulline, which can add to blood pressure, nitrate and ED drugs.
Those arginine and citrulline cautions are set out in full on our side effects page.
Is the beta alanine a reason to choose Memodyne?
No. At 40 mg it is a token amount: too small to raise carnosine the way studies did, too small to tingle, and untested for focus.

Beta alanine in Memodyne: your questions
How much beta alanine is in Memodyne?
40 mg per capsule, and the label says no Daily Value has been set for it. At one capsule a day, a 30-capsule bottle holds 1.2 g in total, less than a single day's dose in the exercise research.
Is beta alanine good for the brain?
No source we opened shows that it is at any dose a capsule could hold. The one trial in older adults used 2.4 g a day and found no overall change in thinking scores.
Why does the seller's ingredient list skip beta alanine?
We do not know; the seller pack's list and the Inside Memodyne graphic simply leave it out. The printed label includes it at 40 mg, and the label is the version we follow.
How long does beta alanine tingling last?
The NIH says the pins-and-needles feeling lasts 60 to 90 minutes. It is reported at doses of about 800 mg or more, twenty times the amount in one capsule.
Is beta alanine tingling dangerous?
WebMD calls it not harmful and says it goes away on its own. It is also not a sign that anything is happening in the brain; it is a skin sensation.
Does beta alanine protect neurons?
That is the brand's wording, and we found nothing to back it. The sources we opened measured muscle carnosine and exercise, not nerve cells.
Is beta alanine the same as L-alanine or alpha lipoic acid?
No. L-alanine is a different amino acid, and alpha lipoic acid (often shortened to ALA) is an unrelated antioxidant compound. Neither is on this label.
How long does beta alanine take to work for exercise?
The sports nutrition society says at least 2 to 4 weeks of 4 to 6 g a day, and WebMD says at least four weeks of daily use. Both describe muscle changes, not focus.
Is beta alanine safe to take for years?
Nobody knows yet. The position stand says it appears safe for healthy people at recommended doses but that there are no safety data beyond one year.
